FAQ Friday: Focus & Exposure

In this video, I show you my new haircut (no more mullet!) and the progress of my baby bump. Oh yeah and I share a few tips on how to get sharp, properly exposed photographs including:
1. Disregard your LCD display

2. Discover your exposure tendencies and compensate for them

3. Use your focal points

4. If you focus and recompose, keep it on the same plane

Please share your thoughts below about focusing or exposure issues you are having or have overcome.  Also I’d love to answer more questions about business, organization, motherhood, life, etc. Let’s get to the nitty gritty!

I’m curious what you think about the back button focus? I tried it and I clearly wasn’t doing it right…

I tried back button focusing and didn’t find that it made all that much of a difference so I’m over it now.

Thanks Kelli!I have found that when photographing speedy little kiddos, I can’t move my focus points fast enough to keep up with them!! Do you have any tips for that? I tend to stick with focus and recomposing, but as you mentioned, it can be a little unreliable.

I agree with what Christy said. Sometimes you can just predict where they’ll go or try to set it up so they’ll go to a certain area where your focal point is already set. After a bit of practice, you will get really fast at moving your focal point buttons too.

  4. Focal Points ROCK!!! I’m amazed at the difference in my photography once I learned how to use the back navigation for focal points. I think after you use it for a while you can get fast enough at it to anticipate where the little ones are going too so it can be used for every style of portrait. Baby bump is cute!
