I haven’t officially started a business yet but I have been pb’ing some. I offered a session to a few close friends for practice last holiday season. I realized how much time it really takes to put into starting a business. I also realized that I don’t want to do it unless I can do it right. Hope this counts as an ok answer even though I didn’t really answer your question.

Doing free photo sessions to get my name out have left me feeling over-worked! I don’t think people appreciate it unless they actually pay for it!

Haven’t tried much, since I’m new, but I tried the whole sepia look for a shoot once & the client wasn’t really a fan. Had to redo the post processing, but in the end it all worked out & the pics were so much cuter in a vintage color. =)

Giving stuff away! Nobody appreciates what they get for free, because they feel like it has no value. This just caused people to not value my services.

What didn’t work for me: Free sessions for advertising. . . I offered free sitting just buy prints and I couldn’t keep up. And didn’t think I was giving my best quality of work so took some time off to reevaluate.

A strategy I tried was offering fall mini sessions. My client base wasn’t too interested, so I don’t think I’ll offer them again. It was good to try it, though!

I take pictures on a regular basis and have so many pictures that I would love to frame. These frames are gorgeous and I have wanted them for a while now except they are too expensive for me to afford! I just love to take pictures because capturing memories are so rewarding. Silent Auctions! Never have had good results and the client that wins them are never in my target market even though the area that I did it in should have attracted the right target marker for me. I hate paying the client to take their pictures!

I think my first strategy that didn’t work, was trying to start business alone! It’s websites like these and other photogs as friends that really helped me get things rolling. I could’ve never done it alone so I’m sooo grateful for photographers that are willing to share ideas and things 🙂

I let my clients choose when they will order prints. I don’t put a time limit or specific date on ordering. Definitely not working! They assume they can wait forever. Maybe someday I’ll get paid for them!

picture parties have not worked
Having really low session fees and really high print prices didn’t work for me. I’m now charging what my time is worth in the photo session fee.

The worse strategy I’ve tried thus far is to give away free sessions to try to earn new business. It worked great, until they all expected me to give them free sessions all the time. Never again will I work for free! Too much time goes into a custom photography session. Lesson learned!!

The strategies I have used that have not been successful is having a promo discounting the session fee. This attracted the wrong people and they wanted everything for nothing.

Good question! I did commercial work for a magazine and it didn’t worked. I had no idea how to price it, I got over exploded doing to much work, got taken advantage off and all that stuff that you don’t want to do or try again. I rather stick with families that truly value my job and have the emotional attachment.

What strategies have you tried with your photography business that have not worked?I have tried to advertise on facebook. Advertising is one of the biggest problems I have. creating a facebook and a twitter and then “friending” everyone and their dog doesn’t seem to work.
