HOW DID ROYAL AND REESE START

Royal and Reese started seven years ago after Tara and Whit had babies six days apart. Frustrated with a lack of cute boy clothing they decided to start their own kids clothing shop named after their two kids whose middle names are Royal and Reese.

They recruited their other sister Kait, they added women’s clothing, which was a huge hit and eventually phased out the kids stuff. It’s been a rollercoaster every step of the way and getting through a pandemic was definitely something that has pushed each of them.

FINDING THEIR ROLES AND WHAT IT’S REALLY LIKE WORKING TOGETHER

Each sister has really found their role in the company by focusing on their unique talents. Tara is a numbers gal. She deals with the accounts and making sure that everything is running smoothly with all the vendors. Whit gets to use her creative side with a lot of the design elements, and where Kait really shines is in sales and being in front of the camera.

KEEPING A UNITED FRONT

A big thing that they learned early was the value of communication and the value of their relationship. Kait said that they learned not to take cheap shots at each other. One big thing they do is they also see the three of them as a unit.

Coming together as a united front also helps your employees to respect you more. If you were talking poorly about your sister, as a leader to your team, they’re gonna think they could do the same. And that kind of company culture isn’t going to be a positive one.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF RUNNING ROYAL AND REESE

This has recently changed. Royal and Reese just made a move to simplify things and moved out of their HUGE 12,000 square foot warehouse. It was costing so much monthly and once they found a new way to ship to customers, they no longer needed the space. So Tara and Kait work out of Tara’s basement in Illinois and Kait works from her house in Nashville.

MORE THAN A BUSINESS: CREATING COMMUNITY

One of the special things about Royal and Reese is that it’s so much more than a clothing boutique. The sisters have been so intentional about making a community. They host tons of LIVE’s and have one the most engaged audiences whom they loving call Loyal Royals. They also launched a podcast earlier this year, the Sisterhood Society, and it’s just that a sisterhood where EVERYONE is welcome.
